Water Into Wine is a visual representation of Jesus Christ’s first public miracle in John 1:1-12 the wedding at Cana. Christ turns 6 jars of water, each filled to the brim with 30 gallons of water, into the finest wine the steward of the feast has ever tased. 6 x 30 = 180 gallons, 1 gallon = 6 bottles of wine. This means that Jesus made roughly 1,000 bottles of wine! There are 1,000 pieces of cork and bottle openers that make up the mosaic. Most people’s Bible print the words Jesus said in red. St. John documents 33 of Christ’s words at the wedding. “O woman, what have you to do with me?” My hour has not yet come…fill the jars with water…now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast.” The mosaic contains 33 real wine stained corks. Finally, the three stained corks at the foot of the cross represent Jesus’s mother, St. Mary, St. Mary Magdalene, and St. John, the one whom Jesus loved. I hope this piece puts into perspective just how extraordinary Jesus’s first miracle truly was, and hey, you always remember your first. May God bless you!
